Franchise icon MATS SUNDIN has returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs as Senior Executive Advisor, offering unparalleled mentorship to the current roster. He will work in tandem with new General Manager JOHN CHAYKA, whose analytical prowess and forward thinking will guide the franchise through a short re-tool and back into contention.
The Leafs enjoyed the luxury of drafting first overall after winning the NHL Draft Lottery. It was the first time the team had the first overall selection since drafting Auston Matthews in 2016. With an assist from Justin Bieber, the Leafs selected Penn State star Gavin McKenna, who the team hopes will be a key contributor during the 2026/27 season.
Despite some health challenges, William Nylander managed to lead the team with 79 points and Captain Auston Matthews scored 27 goals in just 60 games. Veteran John Tavares was as steady and reliable as ever, managing 31 goals to lead the team and was also the only player to suit up for all 82 games during the 2025/26 season. The Leafs also acquired the premier free agent – defenseman Darren Raddysh - who accumulated 70 points and 22 goals last year, to be another weapon on the power play. The season also provided some insight into the true potential of young cornerstones Matthew Knies and Easton Cowan. Both players combined for 34 goals and 95 points. At 23 and 21 years of age, they have yet to hit their peak and they will be aiming to reach new heights during the 2026/27 season. There are also reinforcements knocking on the NHL door, through their AHL farm team, the Toronto Marlies, who won the 2026/27 Calder Cup.
The Leafs still have elite talent and the new management team will look to augment the roster with more shrewd trades and signings this offseason.
