2025/26 LEAFS: A NEW LOOK, A NEW DIRECTION

The Toronto Maple Leafs — winners of the Atlantic Division this past season — will look much different in 2025/26 compared to its previous iterations. With more than 25 million in cap space, GM Brad Treliving will have the ability to continue to reshape the roster in his vision.

Captain Auston Matthews battled through a season long injury he suffered in training camp and still managed to score 33 goals and 78 points in just 67 games. William Nylander played 82 games for the third consecutive season and also eclipsed 40 goals for the third consecutive season. Lastly, Matthew Knies has quickly established himself as a valuable player in coach Craig Berube’s system — he forechecks aggressively, is tenacious on the puck and skates hard in all zones.

The team’s defense was overhauled last year, with great results. Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jake McCabe were a combined +68, while giving up 30 or fewer goals as a team than the previous year. The team’s improved defensive metrics can also be attributed excellent goalie tandem the Leafs can boast — Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz combined to win 48 games and had a save percentage of .916 and a GAA of 2.47 between both goaltenders.

Leafs fans are optimistic that with some tweaks in free agency and possibly the trade market, this team will have a great chance to defend as Atlantic Division Champions and contend for the Stanley Cup!
