New Head Coach Set to Strengthen Raptors Culture Of Success
The Toronto Raptors bring a new look behind the bench in 2023-24, as Darko Rajakovic becomes the 10th head coach in franchise history.
The 44-year-old from Cacak, Serbia spent the previous nine seasons as an assistant around the NBA (Thunder, Suns and Grizzlies). And he’ll certainly be prepared to apply his skills, as one of the best player development minds in the game, in his first head coaching campaign.
At 22, Scottie Barnes has plenty of room to grow, after averaging 15.3 points per game during the past two seasons. And Precious Achiuwa has progressed with the same consistency as Barnes, since arriving in 2021.
Veteran leadership remains strong along the roster, as Pascal Siakam, Precious Achiuwa, OG Anunoby and others are ready to get back into title contention. The Raptors made the playoffs eight of the past 10 seasons, including a championship win in 2019. That’s significant experience for a new coach to tap into with a fresh perspective.
“Character, quality of a person and energy,” Vice Chairman and President Masai Ujiri mentioned as the traits he wants to see in the team’s new head coach. “The kind of energy we get from the team is important, along with discipline and style of play.”
A team built on culture will be ready to see what can develop under a new coach. And the possibilities are endless with the athletic talent currently in place.
